Food Waste composting

We have now started composting food waste and coffee grounds  from the cafe at University of Leicester Botanic Gardens. Yesterday we collected the first batches of waste sandwiches  which were not sold on Friday and Saturday and are have started composting them at the Garden Composting Demonstration site.

So that the process is kept as near to Home Composting as possible we are using compost bins sold for use at home:

1 Jora 125  http://www.smartsoil.co.uk/

Green Johanna and a Green Cone Food Digester  http://www.greatgreensystems.com/

Entry to the Garden is free ( with a couple of exceptions ) and a Master composter will be on site Saturday afternoons to provide help and advice. Why not pay a visit?

Plant Sale & Family Day

The annual Botanic Garden Plant Sale & Family Day on Sunday 28th June  is the biggest annual public open day, and an important fixture in the community's calendar. All the proceeds go to the Friends of the Botanic Garden, who support the Garden by funding developments.

We welcome between 1500-2000 visitors, of all ages. Come to the compost site and also buy plants, and  spend the day exploring a variety of stalls around the themes covered by the Botanic Garden's work: education, research, botany, horticulture, conservation, sustainability, both global and local.

There are specialist plant nurseries, arts and crafts stalls with sales and activities, environmental/wildlife societies with information, activities and entertainments. You can listen to local bands while you enjoy refreshments on the lawn, all in aid  of the Botanic Garden. Whether you are looking for plants for your garden, craft items for gifts, or an enjoyable day out with friends and neighbours, there is something for everyone.
